Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Part 2 – June 22, 23, and 25.

FASD-Informed Approach: Reframing, Supportive Interventions, and Building Positive Relationships

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs) are a range of lifelong neurodevelopmental disorders that can result when an individual is prenatally exposed to alcohol. Research findings indicate between 2-5% of the general population have an FASD, and rates between 10-40 times higher in special populations, including foster care, corrections, and special education. Given these high numbers, it is important for providers in mental health and medicine, DCFS workers, and educators to adopt an FASD-informed approach to more effectively intervene with and support individuals with FASD to improve outcomes. This three 4-hour training series will provide a foundation for embracing and utilizing a FASD-informed approach when working with families and individuals with FASD. The first part examines the role of stigma on FASD and will help providers adopt more compassionate and effective attitudes, thoughts, and responses to families and individuals with FASD. The second part reviews strategies, including OT sensory-based interventions, to use when addressing primary disabilities across developmental stages from infants to young adults. Finally, the third part of the training will focus on adapting EBPs and the importance of building positive relationships and increasing resiliency for persons with FASD.

THREE DAY TRAINING, MONDAY JUNE 22, TUESDAY JUNE 23, AND THURSDAY JUNE 25, 2020 – Each 4 hour training will be delivered via Zoom Webinar. Webinar link will be forwarded JUNE 19, after 5pm.

Three 4-hour training series – 12 total hours (11 hours CEUs)Course meets the qualifications for 11 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. CE provider # 139288. Attendees must attend all three 4-hour sessions to obtain 11 hours of CEUs. Partial CEU credit will not be given.

Part A: Laying the Foundation for FASD-Informed Attitudes, Thoughts, and Responses

  • 9am to 11:00am Review of FASD 101 Concepts and Principles, Understanding Stigma Against FASD, Person-First Language for Promoting Dignity for Individuals with FASD
  • 11am to 11:20am – Break
  • 11:20am to 1:00pm – Adopting an FASD-informed Approach – Changing our attitudes, thoughts, and responses to improve outcomes for individuals with FASD

Part B: Supportive Strategies to address Primary Disabilities throughout Development

  • 9am to 11:00am FASD Primary Disabilities and Developmental Stages: Interventions and Case studies for Infants/Toddlers, Early Childhood, and School-Aged Children
  • 11am to 11:20am – Break
  • 11:20am to 1:00pm – FASD Primary Disabilities and Developmental Stages: Interventions and Case studies for Adolescents and Young Adults Occupational Therapy and other helpful strategies for improving functioning for Individuals with FASD

Michele Walker-Bauer, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Program Manager at the VIP Community Mental Health Center. Since 2006, Michele has worked with families and children with FASD in various roles, including conducting psychological assessments and providing individual, collateral, and family therapy. In 2009, she was trained as specialist in the Families Moving Forward (FMF) Program, a caregiver-focused intervention for families with children with FASD, and for the past 8 years, has trained and supervised clinicians in the FMF program. Over the years, Michele has expanded the FASD Program to include the 6-week Triumph parenting class and a mindfulness group for teens with FASD, and she continues to work with colleagues on creating and implementing research-informed and innovative clinical approaches to improve the outcomes for families and children with FASD. Michele is committed to increasing FASD awareness and funding at the state level through county trainings, conference presentations, and ongoing collaboration with other FASD researchers and advocates.

Ana C. Cardenas Rolon, LCSW is the FASD Program Clinical Supervisor at the VIP Community Mental Health Center. She has a B.A. in Sociology from University of California, Berkeley and a Master’s in Social work from New York University. Since 2012 she has been working with children who have been diagnosed with FASD, providing bilingual individual, family, collateral, and group therapy. In addition to being an FASD specialist, Ana is also trained in Infant Mental Health Services, School-Based Mental Health Services, Evidence-Based Practices in The Incredible Years Parent and Child, Managing and Adapting Practice, Child Parent Psychotherapy, Seeking Safety, Crisis Oriented Recovery Services, Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and community outreach.
